Hard disk motor is the base of the hard drive and a part that changed the least trough hard disk history. Motor, through its RPM, is an essential factor for the speed of data access and copying.
In modern hard disks there are no motors with ball bearings. New, cheaper, quieter but less reliable motors with fluid bearings are standard in the last few years.
Motor failure is easy to mix up with electronics failure. The difference is that when the motor is damaged, there's a weak buzzing sound coming from the hard drive.
Motor failure is one of the most complex defects. In most cases with motor failures the bearing gets stuck which prevents the hard drive platters from spinning.
This bearing is located under the hard drive platters and its replacement implies the removal of platters and heads and, eventually, replacement of the bearing itself. This operation requires specialized tools which keep the platters synchronized at all times.
In order to make this proces as safe as possible, within HelpDisc we have developed the HddSurgery Spindle Replacement Tool which enables the bearing replacement without the need to move platters or heads. This way we increased the success rate of data recovery from drives with this kind of malfunction.
